For the Brief

Curator Saziso Phiri approached us to produce content for Our Acres, part of the Re-Frame residency programme supported by Jerwood Arts. The commission aimed to support Solomon Berrio-Allen in exploring movement, sound, and visual art in a cross-disciplinary format. Our responsibility was to deliver a faithful yet creative documentation of Map 8: A Breath Before – a live performance that explored diasporic embodiment, healing, and spiritual sovereignty. We were also asked to document the space ahead of the performance, interview the artist, and capture footage of additional elements like a live saxophone performance.

For the Style

The visual approach to Our Acres: A Breath Before was immersive, reverent, and intentionally minimal. In line with the artist’s request, we worked entirely with natural light, allowing the rawness of the space and performance to take precedence. The full-length film was shot as a near-continuous take, capturing the live energy and movement without disruption—honouring the sacred atmosphere and the rhythm of the work.

For the highlights film, we layered interview footage and soundscape with dynamic performance moments, intercut with still and ambient visuals from the installation. The pace was slow and meditative, with edits guided by breath, silence, and sonic shifts. The photography followed suit—documenting textures, gestures, and ritual-like detail with softness and space. The final style across film and photography reflects the piece’s spirit: embodied, sacred, and grounded.

The documentation was well received by both NAE and FABRIC. The videos now form part of the official archive for the Re-Frame programme and serve as a lasting reflection of Solomon Berrio-Allen's residency. The footage was praised for its sensitivity to the space, its faithful rendering of the performance, and its contribution to amplifying experimental, cross-disciplinary work rooted in Black movement practice.

"Many thanks to you and the team for the work." – Saziso Phiri, Curator
