For the Brief

We were commissioned by curator Saziso Phiri at New Art Exchange to produce a short film for Water Into Wine—a solo exhibition by Nottingham artist Kim Thompson. The film was designed to spotlight Kim’s creative process, provide insight into the inspiration behind the project, and elevate her fine art practice—particularly as she is more widely known for her graphic illustration work. The film also aimed to honour the stories of the nine Caribbean-descended Nottingham residents whose experiences shaped the paintings, capturing their reflections during a private viewing of the exhibition.

For the Style

The approach was intimate, observational, and layered. We combined quiet moments of Kim painting in her studio with a reflective sit-down interview to draw out the emotional and conceptual depth of her work. Footage from the private viewing added warmth and authenticity, capturing raw reactions from the contributors. The visual tone was clean and considered—complementing the fine art setting while letting the humanity of the subjects shine through. The edit was slow-paced and intentional, allowing space for reflection and connection.

For the Result

The film was shared online via YouTube and social media as part of New Art Exchange’s public engagement. It was well received—highlighted for its sensitivity, pacing, and the way it showcased both Kim’s artistry and the heart of the project. It now stands as a lasting, shareable piece that reflects the spirit of the exhibition and honours the people who shaped it.
